Greetings...!
Ok, statement...
I overall mainly like to make things, I enjoy more then anything focusing on the task in hand. Kiki Smith once said that there is a spiritual power in repetition, that it has a devotional quality to it, for me this is completely true also. There's nothing I like more then to ask questions, open ended questions, ones available to interpretation and discussion and then to discover other people's responses to these questions, and then to do something with these responses. I am very much interested in 'the human condition' and other such philosophical conundrums that can enter into our lives. I'm also interested in accessible art, stuff that everyone can be involved in if they so choose to be.
by making my art work through questions and other peoples responses to them I think the work produced gets a certain amount of raw honesty and truth that would not have been achieved if I'd just put my own stamp on it by answering questions myself and giving my own interpretations.
I'm also interested not just in the content of the answers but also the structure - peoples use of language, slang terminology and writing styles are just as important for me because these are unique to everyone that gets involved, even if some of the answers are the same they have individuality within them.
Questions that have arisen in my work so far are all questions that have genuinely confounded me, and I usually found many others they had puzzled also. I believe they were a vehicle for me trying to find common ground with others... the questions so far have been surrounding memories, unanswerable questions, definitions of Love, Lust & Pain. The question I am working with at the moment is Tell Me Something About Your First Love and in the pipeline are works to do with hopes and dreams and 'The Most Amazing Thing You Have Ever Witnessed'...
